The turkey has a schedule. The side dishes have a schedule. Somehow, your back never received the schedule.

Thanksgiving can mean hours at the counter, a car ride across North Texas, a full table, and an even fuller couch. None of those activities is automatically a problem. But when your usual routine changes, it helps to give yourself a few options for moving and getting comfortable.

For Keller families preparing to host or head out of town, here is a practical guide to the day.

Before the cooking starts: set yourself up for less reaching

Think about the jobs you will repeat. Can the mixing bowl sit closer? Can the ingredients you use most stay within easy reach? Is there a clear place to set a hot dish before you lift it?

Try doing some preparation seated at the table, then stand for a different task. Share the jobs that involve heavy pans or repeated trips to the oven. Comfortable shoes may make time on your feet more pleasant, too.

These are ways to make the task easier—not rules for holding your body perfectly. Choose an arrangement that works for your kitchen and lets you change position.

While dinner cooks: use the natural pauses

You do not need to turn Thanksgiving into an exercise class. Let the ordinary breaks in the day remind you to move:

Taking breaks from repetitive tasks or prolonged positions is consistent with general back-care advice. Keep movements comfortable rather than forcing a stretch. Cambridge University Hospitals: Back pain

Moving the turkey is a two-person job when you need it to be

A hot, heavy roasting pan is an awkward thing to carry while people are moving around you.

Clear the route first. Have a stable landing spot ready. Use dry oven mitts with a secure grip, and ask someone to help if the pan is more than you can comfortably control. Smaller serving dishes can also make the trip to the table more manageable.

There is no holiday prize for carrying everything in one trip.

If you already have pain that lifting aggravates, hand off the heavy work. Our guide to back pain after lifting explains how to think about symptoms that start during a task.

At the table: enjoy the meal, then change things up

You do not need to sit rigidly through dinner. Find a comfortable position, use the chair back if it helps, and adjust as needed.

Afterward, consider a short, easy walk with whoever wants to join you. Around the block counts. So does a few minutes moving around the house if the weather is uninviting.

The point is to make room for ordinary activity. For many common back-pain episodes, staying gently active is preferable to prolonged bed rest. That does not mean pushing through worsening pain. NHS: Back pain

On the couch: keep the football, add some variety

You can enjoy the game. You can also switch seats, stand during a break, or take a brief walk before the next quarter.

If you are spending the afternoon looking at family photos on a phone, try bringing the screen closer to eye level or resting your arms on a cushion. Change your setup if your neck begins to feel uncomfortable.

Think of these as experiments in comfort. If a position helps, use it. If it does not, try something else. For recurring symptoms, explore our information about neck pain and individualized care.

If Thanksgiving includes a drive

Build in opportunities to stop safely, get out, and move. Before leaving, adjust the seat so you can comfortably reach the pedals and steering wheel. Make adjustments while parked.

Passengers can shift position, but everyone should remain properly seat-belted while the vehicle is moving. Holiday travel guidance also recommends movement breaks and manageable luggage loads. AAOS: Holiday travel guidance

When discomfort deserves more than a movement break

Arrange an evaluation when pain keeps returning, is not improving, or interferes with everyday activities. Seek urgent medical advice for severe sudden or rapidly worsening pain, especially with fever or feeling unwell.

New bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the groin, or significant or progressive leg weakness with back pain require emergency assessment. Do not wait for a routine chiropractic visit. NHS: Back pain
