Your family wants to do the Turkey Trot. You like the idea of getting outside together. You are less sure about the part where everyone suddenly seems to own running shoes and talk about their pace.

Here is the good news: you do not have to turn the morning into a race.

Keller’s Run With The Turkeys Trot is scheduled for Thursday, November 26, 2026, at Keller Town Hall, 1100 Bear Creek Parkway. The event is advertised as a walk/run, and registration includes an untimed 5K option alongside timed events. A 5K is approximately 3.1 miles. Source 4

If you plan to walk, the most useful preparation is to become familiar with a manageable amount of walking before Thanksgiving morning.

Choose the experience you actually want

Before registering, talk with the people joining you. Is the goal to walk together? Run for a time? Bring visiting relatives along?

Those are different mornings. Agreeing beforehand can prevent the slower walker from feeling pressured to keep up or the runner from expecting everyone to share a pace. Check the organizer’s current course rules and time limits if you have concerns about completing the distance.

Walking is a legitimate choice. It is not an unsuccessful version of running.

Start from what you can comfortably do now

If you have been inactive, begin with a short, comfortable walk and gradually add time or distance. The American Heart Association suggests starting with manageable outings—perhaps 10–15 minutes—and building from there. Shorter sessions can be useful too. Source 5

You might use a familiar neighborhood route or an easy stretch near Bear Creek Park. Choose somewhere you can turn around or shorten the outing rather than committing to a long loop immediately.

Use those walks to answer practical questions: Do these shoes rub? Is this pace comfortable? How do I feel afterward? What will I need to carry?

There is no universal four-week schedule that fits every starting point. If even a short walk is difficult, you have a medical condition that affects exercise, or you are returning after an injury, ask your healthcare professional what is appropriate. Do not cram missed preparation into the final weekend.

Make race morning familiar

Allow time for parking, packet arrangements, and finding your group. The organizer currently lists the untimed 5K start at 8:15 a.m. Check the official event page again before attending; schedules and weather arrangements can change. Source 4

You do not have to finish at any cost

A family outing is not a test of how much pain you can ignore. Stop and seek advice if walking brings on foot, knee, hip, or back pain. Do not try to solve a new problem by forcing a different stride or stretching harder on the course. Source 5

For chest pain, fainting, or severe/unusual shortness of breath, stop and get urgent medical help; call 911 for an emergency. An event goal never takes priority over your health.

If recurring discomfort is already making you uncertain about participating, an assessment before the event can help clarify your options. It cannot guarantee that you will be ready, and chiropractic treatment is not a requirement for joining a walk.

Let the morning be the beginning

The most worthwhile result might be a family walk you decide to repeat. Perhaps it becomes a regular neighborhood loop, a weekend outing, or an excuse to spend time together away from a screen.

You do not need a finishing time to make that worthwhile.
