If you've ever felt pain shoot from your low back into your hip, glute, or down your leg, you know how disruptive it can be.
The goal of this article is simple: help you understand what sciatica often feels like, what red flags to watch for, and what first steps usually help.
Important safety note
If you have progressive weakness, numbness in the groin area, or bowel/bladder changes, seek urgent medical care. Those are red flags.
What sciatica usually feels like
Sciatica isn't a diagnosis by itself it's a pattern of symptoms that typically involves irritation of the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that form it.
Sharp, burning, or electric pain
Often felt in the glute, hamstring, calf, or foot sometimes more than the back itself.
Pain with standing or walking
Some people feel worse after standing still; others feel worse after sitting too long.
Tingling or numbness
Pins-and-needles or reduced sensation down the leg can happen when nerves are irritated.
One-sided symptoms
Sciatica is commonly worse on one side, though it can switch depending on mechanics.
What to do first (simple steps)
These are general first steps that often help calm irritation while you figure out the real driver.
- Avoid the positions that spike symptoms (usually prolonged sitting or repeated bending)
- Take short, frequent walks gentle movement is often better than total rest
- Use a pillow under knees (back sleeping) or between knees (side sleeping) to reduce tension
- If lifting is unavoidable, slow down and keep the load close to your body
The goal is to reduce irritation not to “stretch it out” aggressively. Some stretches can make nerve symptoms worse if they aren't the right fit.
